Dr. Paul Kwo, MD, is a nationally recognized hepatologist and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University, practicing at Stanford Health Care in Pleasanton, California. He serves as the Director of Hepatology and Chief of the Liver Clinic, where he specializes in the management of complex liver diseases, including viral hepatitis, metabolic liver disorders, and liver transplantation. Dr. Kwo earned his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center, followed by a gastroenterology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. He is board certified in both Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology.
Before joining Stanford in 2016, Dr. Kwo was a long-standing faculty member at Indiana University, where he earned distinction as an Outstanding Young Clinician. He has authored or co-authored over 400 peer-reviewed publications and is a frequent contributor to national clinical guidelines, including the widely cited ACG Clinical Guideline on abnormal liver chemistries. His research has focused extensively on hepatitis C, liver transplantation, and liver cancer, and he has led multiple landmark clinical trials that have shaped modern hepatology practice. A frequent lecturer and educator, Dr. Kwo continues to play an active role in advancing liver disease care through both clinical innovation and academic leadership.
